IN AN EVER-CHANGING AND COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE, GHISLAINE LANDRY HAS BEEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF WOMEN’S RUGBY IN CANADA, AND THE WORLD, FOR OVER A DECADE.

As Captain of Canada's Women’s Rugby Sevens team, Ghislaine's leadership on and off the field have been pivotal to the success and growth of Canadian women’s rugby. She has helped the team win a World Cup Sevens silver medal, a Pan American Games gold medal, 28 World Sevens Series medals, and an Olympic bronze medal in 2016.

In 2018, she became the first woman to reach 1000 points on the World Sevens Series and currently holds the all-time women’s points record. Ghislaine has been named to the World Sevens Series Season Dream Team 4 times, and was nominated for World Sevens Player of the Year in 2017.

Ghislaine has never been the biggest player on the field, but her heart and dedication to her craft have allowed her to continue to excel and perform at the highest level on the world stage.

I grew up watching Marnie McBean, Donovan Bailey, Simon Whitfield and Clara Hughes at the Olympic Games and I’ve dreamt of standing on top of the Olympic podium many times. Long before rugby was even in the Olympics, a far off dream that was never really in reach, until it was.

That dream gave me purpose. But underperforming is also sometimes part of the game. Individually and as a team we’ve done amazing things on the field, but we’ve also lost enough games to know that’s it’s not the whole purpose. Winning is often the goal, but it’s not the biggest reason I play. I love the chase, the effort, the pursuit of something great. In the time between the winning, there is a lot of magic. Proud to be part of the team, imagining all the kids watching the Games and dreaming up their own big brave dreams.

We always knew this was about more than rugby, about more than one tournament, even if it’s the Olympics.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone for the support. To the parents who messaged on behalf of their kids, to the players who left the game because of mental health, to the next generation of rugby players with big dreams, we stand with you.

And to our family and friends who have been there for us through it all, there are no words. ❤️
